Monte-Carlo Casino and Opera House

Posted on: August 27, 2011

Monte Carlo Casino opened in 1865 on orders of the royal Grimaldis. Before that Monaco was one of the poorest countries in Europe. The opulent casino immediately became the playtime focus of Europe's upper crust. http://www.unr.edu/gaming/

The casino is located in the heart of Monaco's Monte Carlo district at Place du Casino, high above the Mediterranean. The interior has been the setting for many popular movies including scenes from the James Bond series (notably when Bond defeats Goldfinger at blackjack). The ceilings are muraled in Baroque style. Arched doorways are finished with gilded moldings. Ionian columns in marble and gilt support the skylights. It is palatial, even for a casino.

In the early afternoon the casino crowd is all tourists. Casual dress prevails, though the casino has a more rigorous dress code at night. The mood is boisterous, but subdued. The enthusiastic hooting and cheering that you'll witness in Las Vegas isn't displayed here. Nobody wants to look gauche in this posh pleasure palace.

Blackjack and roulette games attract more seasoned gamblers but the slot machines are draw the most action, and the most popular are those with the "007". http://www.visitmonaco.com/us/Places-to-visit/Walks/Monte-Carlo%2C-the-casinohttp://www.montecarlocasinos.com/http://www.unr.edu/gaming/
